The film centers on a deep space transporter that crash-lands on a desolate planet. Among the survivors is convicted criminal Richard B Riddick who finds out that the planet suffers a total eclipse, which is when the hibernating, flesh-eating inhabitants awake and hunt.

Rated R for sci-fi violence and gore, and for language, the film sports a 59% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Despite an interesting premise (and a starmaking turn from Vin Diesel), Pitch Black is too derivative and formulaic to fully recommend to sci-fi or action fans.
