Classic Noir Crime Thriller THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER Getting Remake at Universal

Despite productions grinding to a halt across Hollywood, Universal today announced plans to remake Charles Laughton’s chilling noir thriller The Night of the Hunter (originally released in 1955). Variety broke the news in an exclusive, reporting:

“Matt Orton (Operation Finale) is penning the script. Though little is known about the new project, it is expected to be a contemporary version of the original thriller, rather than a period piece.”

Obviously, we’ll be following this story closely as it developes.

If you’ve never seen The Night of the Hunter, check out the film’s trailer and synopsis below. The movie stars Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, and Lillian Gish.

Synopsis:
The Rev. Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) is a religious fanatic and serial killer who targets women who use their sexuality to attract men. Serving time in prison for car theft, he meets condemned murderer Ben Harper (Peter Graves), who confesses to hiding $10,000 in stolen loot. Released from jail, Powell is obsessed with finding the money, and he tracks down Harper’s widow, Willa (Shelley Winters), and her two children, John (Billy Chapin) and Pearl (Sally Jane Bruce).
