PARASITE Director Wants to Make a “Different” Kind of Musical

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite was, you know, kind of a big deal last year. And so it makes sense that everyone and their mother (natch) is awaiting news on his next film. And today we hear that he wants to make a musical… his way.

He tells Empire: “I would love to make a musical. Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, fuck this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ In The Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be… different.”

Parasite is directed by Bong Joon-ho from a script he co-wrote with by Han Jin-won. It stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam. Bong Joon-ho also produced the film along with Kwak Sin-ae, Moon Yang-kwon, and Jang Young-hwan.

It centers on the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide “indispensable” luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims’ newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks.

The film currently holds a killer 99% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: “An urgent, brilliantly layered look at timely social themes, Parasite finds writer-director Bong Joon Ho in near-total command of his craft.”
