MGM’s STARGATE Reboot Ain’t Happening Anytime Soon

Evidently there was a reboot of Independence Day director Roland Emmerich’s Stargate with Kurt Russell and James Spader in the works at MGM. I didn’t know this. But it really doesn’t matter much as today we learned that the reboot ain’t happening anytime soon.
Emmerich tells ComicBook: “Yeah, I kind of talked a little bit with MGM about Stargate. But I think this is going nowhere because there was another TV show, and they kind of realized that if it’s like some sort of a mixed bag.”

Stargate begins in modern-day Egypt, professor Daniel Jackson (James Spader) teams up with retired Army Col. Jack O’Neil (Kurt Russell) to unlock the code of an interstellar gateway to an ancient Egypt-like world. They arrive on a planet ruled by the despotic Ra (Jaye Davidson), who holds the key to the Earth travelers’ safe return. Now, in order to escape from their intergalactic purgatory, Jackson and O’Neil must convince the planet’s people that Ra must be overthrown.
Rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence, the film sports a 51% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Stargate has splashy visuals and James Spader to recommend it, but corny characterization and a clunky script makes this a portal to ho-hum.

Stargate was directed by Roland Emmerich from a screenplay he co-wrote with producer Dean Devlin. It stars Kurt Russell as Colonel Jonathan “Jack” O’Neil with James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson and Jaye Davidson (The Crying Game) as Ra. MGM unleashed it on October 28, 1994.
