This Day in Horror: GET OUT Released in 2017 + Happy Birthday Daniel Kaluuya

On February 24th, 1989, Daniel Kaluuya was born in London, England. 28 years later, Jordan Peele’s debut film, Get Out, was released on the same date. Today, both the actor and the film have become iconic; Peele won a Best Screenplay Oscar for Get Out and Kaluuya became an instant A-Lister.

Synopsis:
Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

Film Trivia:

When writer, co-producer, and director Jordan Peele was asked if Universal Pictures wanted him to do a sequel to Get Out, he stated, “Of course they have. It was the first thing they said, ‘Let’s do a sequel.'” He goes on to say, “Honestly, I’m open to it. I love the project, but I won’t do a sequel just for some kind of cash grab. If it’s right, if it feels good, and I feel like I can beat the original, I’ll do it.” (Source)

Daniel Kaluuya was given the lead role in Get Out on the spot after nailing his audition. Writer, co-producer, and director Jordan Peele said Kaluuya did about five takes of a key scene, in which his character needs to cry, and each was so perfect that the single tear came down at the exact same time for each take. Peele told him he had the role right then, but Kaluuya later joked that since he was wary of people in Hollywood, he didn’t quite believe it yet. (Source)

Daniel Kaluuya Trivia:

While still at school Kaluuya was recruited as a contributor writer and actor for the critically acclaimed UK teen drama series Skins (2007). Before long, and while still in his teens, he was writing full hour-long episodes for the show, making him one of the youngest people ever to write an episode of primetime drama. (Source)
