Leonardo DiCaprio’s AKIRA Remake Will Still Happen

Producer Leonardo DiCaprio and What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi’s live-action remake of Akira was put on hold last year just as it was set to begin shooting. And today, Waititi says he still thinks the movie will eventually happen – but he’s not sure he’ll be at the helm.

Waititi tells Variety: “The whole thing went on hold. We had to keep pushing the dates, and it encroached on the Thor dates, which were immovable. So Akira ended up shifting two years down the track. So I’m not sure if even in two years I’d be – I don’t know what I’m doing in f*cking two days. I think eventually it will happen. I’m just not sure if I’ll be doing it.”

The cyberpunk adventure takes place in the post-apocalyptic city of Neo-Tokyo where a teenage boy is exposed to a mysterious energy source and develops telekinetic powers that place him at the center of a conflict that may destroy the world.
Akira sports an 89% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: “Akira is strikingly bloody and violent, but its phenomenal animation and sheer kinetic energy helped set the standard for modern anime.” Amen to that, brother.
