Writer-director Issa López’s highly anticipated horror-fantasy film Tigers Are Not Afraid will get a Toronto-exclusive theatrical run at TIFF Bell Lightbox starting Friday, August 23. The film’s opening night screening will be presented by one of the film’s biggest fans: Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth), who will host a Q&A with the filmmaker after the 7:45 pm screening on August 23.

López draws on the real-life consequences of the drug wars in Mexico for her dark fairy tale about orphaned children left behind in the aftermath of violence. The Shudder Exclusive film follows 10-year-old Estrella, who wants nothing more than to be reunited with her missing mother. In true horror fashion, her wish is granted with a cruel twist when her mother returns to her from the dead to haunt her every move. Hoping to escape the past, Estrella runs away and joins a gang of street kids who have experienced similar losses. But she soon realizes that the dead and those we lose never truly leave us — and that wishes rarely come true the way you want them to.

Tigers Are Not Afraid opens August 23rd, only at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
