Though described as a whimsical horror comedy, the trailer for The Bastards Fig Tree looks like the most nerve-shredding film set during the Spanish Civil War since Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth. And, though clearly not a dark fairy tale, The Bastards Fig Tree looks like it has elements of magical realism that are staples of Spanish literature and cinema.

Synopsis:
Near the end of the Spanish War, a “trigger happy” fascist soldier turns into a hermit and gets caught up in the care of a fig tree after the look in a ten year old child’s eyes, son of one of his victims, awakes in him the certainty that the kid will kill him as soon as he reaches sixteen years of age.
Ana Murugarren directs The Bastards Fig Tree from a screenplay she adapted from the novel by Ramiro Pinilla; the film stars Karra Elejalde, Pepa Aniorte, and Carlos Areces. The film will enjoy a limited theatrical run later this month with a VOD release following in June.
