Jordan Peele Has Been Afraid of Doppelgängers Since He Was a Kid

Us hits theaters nationwide today, and the idea of a long-lost twin will henceforth be regarded as a concept fraught with terror. Horror and sci-fi practitioners have dabbled with the idea of doppelgängers for decades, but Jordan Peele’s follow-up to Get Out is a piece of bizarre, surreal horror that’s likely to shake moviegoers to their core.
It turns out, Peele has been afraid of the idea of doppelgängers for most of his life. Here’s what he told Seth Myers on the Late Show:
“I’ve been terrified of the idea of doppelgängers since I was a kid. I always had this vision of seeing myself across the subway platform. And just kind of thought, if that’s not creepy enough, what if the other you sort of smiled at you. The idea of a doppelganger family was like ‘okay,’ my imagination went crazy, and out came this film.”

Synopsis:
Accompanied by her husband, son and
daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a
child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows
increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen. Her worst fears
soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house,
forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, the
family is horrified to learn that each attacker takes the appearance of one of
them.
