Amazon’s THE DARK TOWER Series Moves Forward with New Lead Cast

2019 is an amazing time to be a Stephen King fan. In addition to Pet Sematary coming out on April 5th, we’ve got IT: Chapter Two to look forward to in September, followed by The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, in November. It’s easy to forget there are also new seasons of Castle Rock and Mr. Mercedes in the works.

Then there’s The Dark Tower TV series over at Amazon. The 2017 film adaptation bombed, but the source material is simply too vast to be encapsulated in a single film—even an epic. So, a TV series could be the perfect vehicle, and Amazon would allow the creative team freedom from the FCC.

The Dark Tower TV series has been in the works for years, but now we’re hearing that things are moving forward at an accelerated pace. There’s just one big change: The cast. Don’t expect Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey to reprise their roles as The Gunslinger and The Man in Black respectively. They’ve been replaced. Variety got the scoop:

“Sources say that Jasper Pääkkönen and Sam Strike have both been cast in the pilot, which is based on the Stephen King book series of the same name. Strike will play Roland Deschain, also known as The Gunslinger, while Pääkkönen is believed to be playing The Man in Black, also known as Marten Broadcloak and Randall Flagg. The series is said to tell the story of how Roland became a gunslinger and his first encounter with the villainous Man in Black.”

With a recasting of the lead actors, fans can probably expect a complete reboot, rather than a continuation of the film. Whatever happens, we’ll keep you posted as the project progresses. Stay tuned and check back often. In the meantime, check out the synopsis and trailer for 2017’s The Dark Tower below.

Synopsis:
Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), the last Gunslinger, is locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim (Matthew McConaughey), also known as the Man in Black. The Gunslinger must prevent the Man in Black from toppling the Dark Tower, the key that holds the universe together. With the fate of worlds at stake, two men collide in the ultimate battle between good and evil.

The Dark Tower was directed by Nikolaj Arcel.
