No matter if you find stories of UFO sightings and alien abductions outrageous or extremely creepy (we’ve certainly received plenty of feedback from both sides over our recent “Alien Ranch” investigation), you’ve got to admit the story of Australian pilot Frederick Valentich is one of the most disturbing UFO-related incidents in recorded history.
While on a short training flight in a single-engine Cessna over Bass Strait, on the evening of October 21, 1978, 26-year-old Valentich informed Melbourne air traffic control he was being followed by an extremely fast aircraft about 1,000 feet above his plane. Shortly afterward, he reported experiencing unexplained engine trouble.
When asked to identify the aircraft, the pilot responded to Melbourne with the following unsettling reply: “It isn’t an aircraft.”
Moments later, his transmission was cut short by a strange, metallic scraping sound… and Valentich was never seen or heard from again.
While there are many theories about this disappearance from professionals and amateur UFO sleuths alike, we may never know what truly happened… as the recording of Valentich on that fateful night has been kept from the public for over four decades.
