What’s a Wendigo? Mysterious Villain from Stephen King’s PET SEMATARY Explored

One of the biggest differences between 1989’s Pet Sematary (directed by Mary Lambert) and the upcoming adaptation (directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer) is the inclusion of the Wendigo. While the creature was part of Stephen King’s novel (upon which both films are based), Lambert chose to ignore the beast in 1989; trailers have already confirmed its appearance in 2019’s Pet Sematary.
Most horror and/or cryptozoology buffs have heard the legend of the Wendigo, a shape shifting human/animal hybrid from Native American folklore. But what are the roots of the Wendigo legend, and what is the creature’s purpose in Pet Sematary?

Synopsis:
Louis Creed, his wife Rachel and their
two children Gage and Ellie move to a rural home where they are welcomed and
enlightened about the eerie ‘Pet Sematary’ located nearby. After the tragedy of
their cat being killed by a truck, Louis resorts to burying it in the
mysterious pet cemetery, which is definitely not as it seems, as it proves to
the Creeds that sometimes, dead is better.
