What Will Motivate the Clash of Titans in GODZILLA VS KONG?

In May, Godzilla will go face-to-face against Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah in a battle for supremacy in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. But since the next film in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs Kong (directed by Adam Wingard), is currently in production targeting a 2020 release date, we know that a new challenger will emerge, no matter what the outcome of King of the Monsters is.

It poses the question, though: What will motivate Godzilla and King Kong to fight in 2020? The trailers for King of the Monsters frame the Big G as a sort of savior Titan, a protector from even more nefarious MUTOs. We also know from 2017’s Kong: Skull Island that the Big K is perfectly content ruling his secluded, tropical island. So, why would a protector and a hermit find cause to throw down?
One of our favorite UK film critics and academics, Mr. H, has a theory, and the bulk of it relates to a group of eco-terrorists who will be introduced in King of the Monsters. Whether they’re motivated to assassinate Godzilla or piggyback the conflict into a potential apocalypse is still a matter of debate. Of course, it’s worth noting that Kong and Godzilla battled in Toho’s MonsterVerse back in 1963. In that case, Kong had been imported to Japan by a pharmaceutical company before escaping into Godzilla’s home turf. Of course a fight was bound to erupt!

they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the
balance.”
Directed by Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus’ Michael Dougherty, who co-wrote the film with Zach Shields, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.
This film has been rated PG-13 for sequences of monster action violence and destruction, and for some language. Look for Godzilla: King of the Monsters to demolish US box offices beginning May 31st
