Producers Describe Extensive Flashbacks Cut from A QUIET PLACE

John Krasinski’s breakout horror/sci-fi megahit A Quiet Place opens almost 3 months into a worldwide alien invasion; the only clues as to what life was like beforehand come from newspaper clipping on the wall of the Abbott’s basement—but this wasn’t always the case. Producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form recently sat down with Yahoo! where they revealed the original script contained a bevy of flashbacks. Form explains:
“There was more dialogue in the original screenplay [by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck]. Because there was an enormous flashback sequence that was removed from the film once John took over [as director and co-writer that took place] way before the invasion” and featured a different character who was ultimately not in the movie. The film’s opening sequence, in which Beau (Cade Woodward), the youngest son of Lee (Krasinski) and Evelyn (Emily Blunt) is mauled by one of the monsters, was also originally going to play out as a flashback, rather than in “real time.”
Indeed, one of the appeals of the A Quiet Place is that we’re completely immersed in this terrifying fictional world. Making a connection to a recognizable reality might have been jarring or, worse, boring by comparison. While we’ll never know what might have been, I personally believe not including any flashbacks to life before the invasion was a solid decision.
