THE PRODIGY Rated R for “Violence, Disturbing and Bloody Images” & More

Nicholas McCarthy is one of the top horror directors we keep an eye out for here at Dread Central following his films The Pact and At the Devil’s Door. And so we’re keeping close tabs on his new supernatural thriller The Prodigy (previously Descendant).

And today we have word via the MPAA that the film has snagged an R-rating for “violence, disturbing and bloody images, a sexual reference and brief graphic nudity.”

The film stars Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black), Jackson Robert Scott (It), Peter Mooney (Burden of Truth), Colm Feore (Thor), and Brittany Allen (Jigsaw).

McCarthy directs the film from a script written by Jeff Buhler (Pet Sematary remake) and it’s produced by Tripp Vinson (The Exorcism Of Emily Rose). The executive producers are Nick Spicer, Buhler, Lisa Zambri and Daniel Bekerman.

Orion Pictures will be releasing the film theatrically in the U.S. on February 8th, 2019.

Synopsis:

The film follows a mother who is concerned about her young son’s disturbing behavior and starts to think that something supernatural may be affecting him.
