Godzilla has just now finally gotten the long overdue anime treatment. Makes sense that one of Japan’s other biggest kaiju stars would also get his own anime. Ultraman will soon be fighting giant monsters in digitally animated glory. Well, by “soon” I mean 2019. Still…

For the uninitiated, “Ultraman” first saved the world (mostly Japan) from giant intergalactic monsters in 1966. The iconic superhero – born of a human host merging with a titanic alien protector – has appeared in countless incarnations since, including an anime movie in the very early Eighties that even most fans prefer to forget.

Ultraman’s creators Tsuburaya Productions broke the news at the Tokyo Comic Con that ULTRAMAN will be the title of a fully computer animated movie based on a popular recent manga series that provided a fresh updating on the classic tokusatsu superhero.

Here’s how kaiju authority August Ragone reported the news on his Facebook page: Bringing an amazing suit of the main character from the popular manga series on stage at this weekend’s convention, it was announced that the full CG animation for the project will be handled by Production I.G (Space Battleship Yamato 2199) and Sola Digitial Arts (Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars) and will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Space Pirate Captain Harlock).

The hosts, Kamiyama and Aramaki were joined on stage by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi, the author and the artist of the manga (available in English from Viz Media) – the premise of which finds that the son of Shin Hayata, the host of Ultraman, has a special “Ultra Factor” in his DNA, and with an armored power suit he fights threats to mankind. While the project was announced to be full CG animation, it was not announced at this time whether this would be a series or a feature film.

A 30-second promotional video was then screened for the audience and has since been uploaded to Tsuburaya Productions’ official YouTube Channel for all of us to see.

Expect to see and hear a lot more in the coming year.
