Carrie the Musical Returning to the New York Stage

And here we go again. Carrie the Musical is returning to the New York stage, this time Off Broadway at the MCC Theater with preview performances set to begin on January 31, 2012. Director Stafford Arima has overhauled the 1988 version with its original creators, with the book (then and now) by Lawrence D. Cohen, music by Michael Gore, and lyrics by Dean Pitchford.
It was in late 2009 when we last heard rumblings of the play making a reappearance after its disastrous 1988 Broadway production, which closed after sixteen previews and five regular performances in the face of terrible reviews. The new production — described by MCC Theater as reworked, reimagined, and set in the present day — is the first professional mounting of Carrie since the 1988 run. Per The NY Times Arima has said that the dialogue and narrative structure of Carrie 2012 will be revamped and about half of the songs will be different.
The cast for this adaptation of the 1974 Stephen King novel about a bullied girl with telekinetic powers and her deeply religious, overprotective mother will be led by (l-r in the below photo) three-time Tony Award nominee Marin Mazzie as the mother, Margaret White, and Molly Ranson as the title character. Both actresses performed their respective parts in a 2009 reading that helped set the stage for this new production.
The length of the 2012 run, the opening night date, and further casting will be announced later. Bernard Telsey, one of MCC Theater’s artistic directors, told the Times, “And what can I say about ‘Carrie’? We’ve been in love with this piece since we heard a reading two years ago, and we can’t believe the amazing work that Larry, Michael, and Dean are already doing with Stafford to reconceive the show for the MCC stage. It’s so moving, and Marin Mazzie and Molly Ranson are going to knock people out.”
Keep it here for more as it comes although we have to say the prospect of this incarnation of Carrie has us a good bit more excited than the theatrical remake talk that’s been floating around lately.
