Anne Rice Teases a Return to Writing Short Stories; Search for Lestat Continues

Sure, a lot of public figures interact with their fans on social media, but few are as active as author Anne Rice. In addition to keeping her followers abreast of every detail she can about the upcoming TV adaptation of “The Vampire Chronicles” (more on that in a bit), she also recently tweeted some news that made my little ol’ heart skip a beat…
Rice started a very interesting Twitter thread with the following remark about a desire to write short stories again:
For the first time in years, I want to write short stories. I see so many little worlds. I see so many characters. I’m going to start.

She followed that up with:
There was a time decades ago when I wrote a short story a night. One of them was entitled “Interview with The Vampire.” 30 pages.

I’m feeling short stories now, seeing rooms, seeing figures, hearing voices. Want to fix all these worlds in print.

Interestingly, it seems her new enthusiasm for short-form writing was sparked by a perfume scent she recently tried that gave her visions of “a hotel room, a steamer trunk, a lady in black suit with a lovely hat.” Be sure to check out the whole chain for the details in Anne’s own inimitable style!
And, if out of these tales she should find another character who inspires her like Lestat has, then we say, “Ms. Rice, get to writing!” Not sure how she’ll squeeze it in with everything else going on, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed!
Now, as for a “Chronicles” update, if you’ve been following her and Christopher on Facebook, you’ll know they’re knee-deep in preparation on the series, with Anne watching all sorts of movies and TV shows for inspiration and casting ideas… speaking of which, they’ve thrown open the doors on suggestions for Lestat, with a focus on “up and coming” actors (although a lot of the responses aren’t taking that part to heart).
So, if you know of someone who would be “perfect” in the role, head on over and share the info. As she wrote, “…we all know that if we don’t get that right, nothing else may matter.”

As a reminder, at the end of April, Paramount Television and Anonymous Content optioned the rights to 11 books from Anne Rice’s bestselling series The Vampire Chronicles. Her son, Christopher Rice, will write and serve as executive producer alongside Ms. Rice and Anonymous Content’s David Kanter and Steve Golin.
