Milla Jovovich Comments on the Resident Evil Franchise Getting a Reboot

It was recently announced that German production company Constantin Films would be rebooting the Resident Evil film franchise with a new six-film series. This comes on the heels of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which ends the story of Alice, who was played by Milla Jovovich.
In a recent chat with CB, Jovovich laid out her thoughts on the news, starting off by saying, “Okay, well good luck with that.”

She continued, expanding her thoughts on how she feels this new set of films needs to be approached, stating, “I think a lot of people with these franchises kind of put the cart before the horse. There’s a danger to that. They’ve been wanting to reboot Resident Evil for a long time, and listen: I love the Resident Evil world. I think it’s a great property, I would do it if I was a producer.”
Milla continues by explaining that she feels like the team she worked with on the films was incredibly devoted and passionate. “I think what made Resident Evil so special is that the people involved really loved what they’re doing and really were fans of the game. I would suggest that you find people that have that same passion for the property before you talk about reboots. I think if you get into this kind of genre, people are very sensitive to fakes. There’s some real fans in the sci-fi/action/horror world, and they’re not idiots. They can smell when something is done because people love it and when something is done just to monetize an opportunity,” she explains.
While I cannot and will not deny that a lot of work went into creating the six Resident Evil films we currently have, there’s no denying that they deviated very heavily from the game series. For many, the stories told in the games were perfect for film adaptations, so not using them felt like a crime. On the other hand, just retelling the stories we’ve played seems like a lazy cop-out, which is why I’ll always respect Anderson’s vision for trying something new.
Personally, I just want my Resident Evil films to feel dangerous, scary, and like the survivors are always teetering on the edge of failing entirely. Make me worry about the protagonists, and I’m all for it!
