Pirates…

Sure, they were thieving, raping, slavery-loving bastards; but we love ’em!  Johnny Depp is hilarious!  That ride is so much fun with all its raping, slavery, and torture!

I’m here to tell you about a mansion on the coast of Texas that just might have more of the scary, evil kind of pirate roaming around than the goofy Disney variety. This story comes to us from alert reader Jewel Carr.  The site Only In Your State brings us photos and a full report.

Stewart Mansion on Galveston Island is abandoned.  Has been for years.

Stewart Mansion

Stewart Mansion

It was built in 1926 by a very wealthy man and named Isla Ranch.  Soon after, it was sold to a man named Stewart, the namesake of the mansion today.  That family owned the mansion until the 60’s, when it was abandoned.  Before that happened, however, it was used as a home for disabled children.

Somewhere down the line, the walls were adorned with detailed murals of pirates, referring to the history of the area.

You see, Jean Lafitte, infamous pirate captain, came to the island in the early 19th century, slaughtered the Native American tribe living there, and set up his slave-trading business.  A nasty foundation for a home.

Visitors to the mansion have reported the sounds of cannon fire, screams, and banging doors.  Shadowy figures have been sighted in the ruins along with ghostly Native American warriors.

The site is due to be demolished by the current owners to build a community center, but will that dispel any dark spirits haunting the land?

What of it, faithful readers?  Do these decrepit walls contain the spirits of the dead, slain by pirates? Will any new construction suffer a similar fate because of the violent past?

Explore The Gasp Menagerie!

Have a weird story? Potential evidence of the supernatural, or at least something hard to explain? Spot any creepy critters out there roaming the wilds? LET ME KNOW! I’d love to talk about it and possibly write it up right here in The Gasp Menagerie. You’ll get appropriate credit, of course, and everyone else will get fresh creepy (as opposed to fresh Creepy, which, trust me… nobody wants that) to enjoy. As always, I can be found at mrdark@dreadcentral.com. Now get out there, find some weird, and let’s get this party started.
