Sights and Sounds From MCM London Comic Con 2016
It may not be quite as big or prestigious as its San Diego counterpart, but this year’s October MCM London Comic Con still turned out to be one hell of a fun event that was bound to have caused more than a few nerdgasms.
It was held as the London ExCeL building, a much larger venue than Earls Court Exhibition Centre, which often hosts the city’s summer Comic Con. This meant that there were not one, but two huge halls packed with fun shit to see and do, plus a third hall containing an indoor fun fair. Yes, an indoor funfair. At Comic Con. Got a problem with that?
And of course, Comic Con wouldn’t be Comic Con without the cosplayers. and here they showed up in full force. I captured most of the most extravagant ones in the images below, including a guy in a giant Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine costume. I didn’t dare to ask what would happen if he needed to use the bathroom. I’m the devilishly handsome guy in the Superman shirt, by the way. And don’t your hopes up, because I happen to enjoy being single.
Sadly, the gore-soaked life-size zombie stormtrooper figurines were a no show this time, but several members of the 501st Legion (a charitable organization who don Stormtrooper outfits) took a break from their usual fundraising endeavors to make an appearance. They may not have found the droids that they were looking for, but they sure made an impression.
There was also a big focus on gaming. Legendary designer Suda 51 delivered a talk (via an interpreter) to help promote the re-release of his 1999 classic The Silver Case, whilst newly released and upcoming titled including Gears of War 4, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk and Tekken 7 all had playable demos.
And yes, before you ask, there were actual comics at the event. Comic books at Comic Con? Crazy, right? Anyway, a large section of one of the halls was devoted to display stands from indie creators and publishers, in addition to a ton of books being on sale.
And I guess we shouldn’t be too sad that it’s over, what with Halloween right around the corner, eh?
