Fan of The Blair Witch Project? Own a Piece of Burkittsville!
Everyone’s going through hard times these days, including the town of Burkittsville, Maryland, whose Town Council has decided to sell at least one (out of four) “Welcome to Burkittsville” sign, made famous by the 1999 movie The Blair Witch Project, on eBay, probably as soon as this weekend.
According to the Frederick, Maryland, News Post, [Burkittsville] Mayor Debbie Burgoyne said a reserve price will be set at around $1,500. The council will determine what to do with the other three depending on how much it sells for. Burgoyne said several local buyers have expressed interest, making selling one or more of the signs locally an option.
The decision was based on the results of last week’s municipal election, when a majority of residents voted to sell all the signs locally or online. Burgoyne said the sale’s revenue will be placed into the town’s coffers for future projects.
Film studio Artisan Entertainment had the heavy metal signs made after souvenir hunters stole the original wooden ones. That didn’t stop the thievery, though, so the town recently replaced them with versions that don’t resemble those seen in the movie.
