Sam Raimi Brings the Spooky for Families

The SubstituteGenre royalty Sam Raimi cares about his fans — from gorehounds who cut their teeth on the Evil Dead franchise to Spidey loving web-heads all over the world. Now he’s getting set to take his terror filled things to a bit more of a family friendly level with his latest endeavor, Spooky Pictures.

Variety reports that Sam Raimi’s genre label Ghost House is launching Spooky Pictures as a new banner that will produce thrillers for family audiences.

The first property out of the proverbial gate will be The Substitute, a remake of the Danish thriller that Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will helm and Columbia Pictures will co-finance and distribute through a first-look deal with Spooky.

This announcement follows a similar label launch by Disney, which has paired up with Guillermo del Toro to make scary flicks for family audiences through Double Dare You. This could be both good and bad for horror as a whole. Should these friendly horror films start making bank, our rated R gorefests may start taking a backseat.

Honestly we don’t know whether to be rooting for or against this. I guess only time will tell.
