Universal’s DARK UNIVERSE Really Dead?

Earlier this year, Universal shut down their planned shared universe of classic movie monsters following the failure of the Tom Cruise flick The Mummy. So the Dark Universe is dead right? Not so much…

The other day Robert Vargas took to Instagram to post about his recent visit to the Dark Universe offices writing, “Great meeting this morning with the amazing Dark Universe team. Thank you Universal Exec, Holly Goline and Crash for the hospitality. Looking forward to contributing to the Universal Pictures legacy with my work. Monster things in the works 😉 Stay tuned!”

You can check out his post below for confirmation. But yes, it seems that Universal is keeping their Dark Universe up and running, for the time being. I don’t know if this means they will be retooling the shared universe from the ground up, or simply revamping their original plans.

I can’t help but hope they revamp the entire plan from the ground up, personally. I don’t think having these monster movies star Hollywood’s A-list was the right way to go. These monsters have persevered for decades now on the popularity of their characters alone – not what Hollywood soup of the day was playing them.

I say, kick out Cruise along with Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, and Javier Bardem and cast mostly unknowns – like Marvel did with their cinematic universe. Sure Robert Downey Jr was a known actor at the time, but he was epically on the outs in Hollywood and so casting him was a ballsy move. And I just can’t believe the Marvel films would have been as popular if they had starred the biggest names in Hollywood – it just ruins the fun of discovering a new character from scratch.

Whatever ends up happening with Universal and their Dark Universe series of rebooted monster movies, we will keep you guys up-to-date either way. Stay tuned! Until then make sure to hit us up and let us know what you think in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!
