Here’s Why Neil Gaiman Won’t Make/Write a New CORALINE Movie/Book

Neil Gaiman published his novella, Coraline, in 2002, (almost) 20 years ago. And today, the American Gods writer reveals he’s so proud of the original book/movie, he doesn’t want a sequel that can’t live up to the original.

He tweets: “I’m waiting for a Coraline story that’s as good as or better than Coraline. There’s no point in making something less than the first book or movie.”

Check out his tweet below.

While exploring her new home, a girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning) discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever. She must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her own family and life.

It sports a 90% over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: With its vivid stop-motion animation combined with Neil Gaiman’s imaginative story, Coraline is a film that’s both visually stunning and wondrously entertaining.

Laika (ParaNorman, Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings, Missing Link) produced the 2009 stop-motion movie. Henry Sellick (The Nightmare Before Christmas) directed.

Selick snagged an Academy Awards nomination for Best Animated Feature

Dakota Fanning leads the killer cast as Coraline. Teri Hatcher joins as Coraline’s mother /Other Mother, John Hodgman as Coraline’s father /Other Father, Jennifer Saunders & Dawn French as April Spink & Miriam Forcible, and Keith David as The Cat.
