Co-Screenwriter Has Now Written a Treatment For DUNE: PART II

Yesterday, Dune co-screenwriter Eric Roth said Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation is “spectacular.” And today, Roth talked a bit about the potential sequel which would adapt the second half of the book.

Read his comments below.

Roth tells Collider: “I [wrote] a treatment to show the estate what we could do with the second half, but I’ve got to tell you that I think I’ve done as much as I can do. I also have other things I want to do. I’m 76 years old, and these things obviously take a long time to do. And so I have a few others I’m excited about. And hopefully, people love Dune so much that they do want to have a second part, and I’m sure Denis would do an amazing version of that.”

Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) is writing a script for the sequel, as we speak. But Warner Bros. still hasn’t officially given a sequel the green light. So let’s all hope this first movie does big business when it hits theaters and HBO Max later this year.

Villeneuve directs Dune from a script he wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, based on the novel. Chalamet, Ferguson, and Brolin’s co-stars include Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgård, and Javier Bardem. Charlotte Rampling joins in with Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Jason Momoa, Stephen Henderson, and Zendaya.

Recently, original Dune star Kyle MacLachlan admits it’s “disheartening” the new film might debut on HBO Max the same day it hits theaters. He tells Seattle Times: “I think the simultaneous release is kind of the wave of the future. It’s disheartening though because a movie like that is meant to be seen on the large screen.”

Dune finds Duke Leto Atreides accepting stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis. The only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, the spice. The drug extends life, provides superhuman thoughts, and makes space travel possible.

Leto takes his concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.

Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, some disturbing images, and suggestive material. Dune hits theaters and also (maybe) HBO Max on October 1.
