Brutal Daisy Ridley Thriller on Hulu Shocks Fans: “John Wick of the Woods”

Daisy Ridley on Hulu

One of my favorite things when buying tickets to my local theater is checking out what else is playing. It’s a bigger theater, so there’s inevitably some kind of re-release, special event, or international offering available that I didn’t know about. This past holiday season, I saw a lot of movies (it’s how I survive the winter), and in November, I remember seeing showtimes available for Daisy Ridley’s The Marsh King’s Daughter and wondering what on earth it was about.

Crime, apparently. While its $3 million box office haul didn’t make much of a splash in the marsh, the psychological thriller charted at Number 5 over the weekend on Hulu.

Check out a trailer and synopsis below:

Per Hulu: In this tense thriller, a woman (Daisy Ridley) returns to the wilds of her youth to face her father (Ben Mendelsohn), the man who kept her and her mother captive for years.

Neil Burger’s feature is adapted from Karen Dionne’s 2017 novel of the same name. Reviews of the feature adaptation were mixed, with critics spotlighting the cast and atmosphere while deriding the pacing and ending. It’s par for the course with psychological thrillers especially—they never end as strongly as they begin.

Still, that hasn’t stopped a new circuit of fans from enjoying one of 2023’s hidden gems. They’ve taken to Twitter to share their thoughts about the twisty-turvy world of Marsh Kings and Star Wars actors. Check out some choice reactions below:

What do you think? Do you plan to check out The Marsh King’s Daughter on Hulu? If you’ve already seen it, how was it? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins! And while it’s not horror, Daisy Ridley fans should check out Sometimes I Think About Dying when they can.
