Hosts Joe Dante, John Waters, Illeana Douglas, and Kevin Pollack are back for Volume 2 of the Time Warp documentary series and this time around they’re diving into the greatest cult hits in horror and science fiction. While every volume is worth watching, this is definitely the one made for horror fans who want to find out if their favorite genre classic is included and where it falls in the discussion.
Like most “best of” lists and docs that cover a wide range of movies, it’s really the arguments and conversations between fans that make these kinds of retrospectives memorable. So, while it’s great to hear from so many filmmakers and actors over the course of a couple of hours, it’s even more special to get together with your friends and family to rediscover these classic films. That’s the main reason why Time Warp: The Greatest Cult Films of All-Time Volume 2 is one of the best group watch choices available right now.
One thing you may not argue about is what film is first up once the hosts are done with their introduction: George Romero’s genre defining black and white masterwork, Night of the Living Dead. When Romero is introduced to wax poetic on the zombie universe he created, it’s immediately comforting (as he always was) but also a little mournful now that he has passed on. The reverence for him and Night carries over to Dawn of the Dead and the inevitable musings of Tom Savini, another welcomed sight (even if you may have heard his stories before). It’s also great to see horror legend Tony Timpone offering insight and commentary once again, even though it is slightly frustrating that he does not seem to age in the slightest.
Other notables that appear once it’s their turn include Bruce Campbell, Rob Zombie, Tom Six, Stuart Gordon, Kevin Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Sean Young, Roger Corman, and Malcolm McDowell. It’s apparent that most of the actors, directors and producers seem to realize that these films defined their career and they embrace that fully. I’ll leave it to you to guess which films they are all representing or you can watch Volume 2 to find out for yourself.
