Nikyatu Jusu’s haunting debut feature Nanny injects West African folklore into mainstream horror. She combines Sengalese legends with the very real issues of race and wealth in the United States to create a new vision of horror that provides a much-needed breath of fresh air into the genre. After its world premiere at this year’s Sundance, Nanny is now coming to theaters later this year.

Read the full synopsis below:

In this psychological horror fable of displacement, Aisha (Anna Diop), a woman who recently emigrated from Senegal, is hired to care for the daughter of an affluent couple living in New York City. Haunted by the absence of the young son she left behind, Aisha hopes her new job will afford her the chance to bring him to the U.S., but becomes increasingly unsettled by the family’s volatile home life. As his arrival approaches, a violent presence begins to invade both her dreams and her reality, threatening the American dream she is painstakingly piecing together.

In his review out of Sundance, Dread Central’s Chad Collins wrote of Nanny:

With unconventional horror beats, a standout lead performance, and moments of profound insights, the kind too often left unexplored, Nanny is a knockout. Familiar beats and some tepidly conceived supporting players constrain its true potential. But as a debut feature, Nanny is destined to enchant.

Watch the trailer below:

Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls, Morgan Spector, Rose Decker, and Leslie Uggams star in the film alongside Diop.

Nanny is in theaters on November 23, 2022 and on Prime Video on December 16, 2022.
