The Conjuring 2 Looking to Capture #1 Spot; James Wan Pranks Brazilian TV

The Conjuring 2 (review #1), which most critics (including many of us here at DC) consider to be a more than worthy follow-up to its predecessor, is poised to take the #1 spot in this weekend’s box office tally (with the not quite so well-reviewed Warcraft in 2nd place).

But the real fun in this story is a prank (or pegadinhas) James Wan shared on Brazilian TV to help promote the film’s release there.

Per EW, in the below video from the show “Programa Silvio Santos”:  The victims of the prank were caregivers sent to tend to a young woman, who turned out to be an actress pretending to be possessed by a demonic spirit. The first phase saw the crosses hanging on the wall flip upside down, while the doors to the room locked and furniture slid across the room. The second scare saw the woman stick to the wall like Spider-Man, and the final act featured another actress emerge from a wardrobe dressed as a blood-stained demonic nun.

We expect director Wan and the film’s producers are celebrating today because already, per Box Office Mojo: Friday estimates are in, and The Conjuring 2 (review #2) finds itself atop the chart with an estimated $16.4 million on track to finish a bit above Mojo’s forecast and an opening weekend around $38 million.

Finishing second is Universal’s Warcraft with an estimated $10.7 million, a better start than expected as it is now looking at an opening around $27 million or so, but the story remains its status in China, which is now around $145 million after just four days. The film’s international total is now estimated at $276.9M as of end of day yesterday.
