‘Gone Girl’ Writer Gillian Flynn’s Darkest Work Is Being Developed Into HBO Limited Series

Gillian Flynn (Sharp Objects and Utopia) might soon have a new series for her fans to look forward to. According to Variety, the mystery author is developing another one of her novels into a limited series for HBO. Flynn’s last collaboration with the network resulted in the Emmy-nominated Sharp Objects. So, we assume this adaptation of Dark Places will also find a large audience.

The novel’s synopsis,

“Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in the famous 1985 ‘Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.’ She survived—and famously testified that her teenage brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, a pair of mother/daughter true crime ‘detectives’ locate a grownup Libby and pump her for details, believing that Ben is innocent. Libby, having spent her youth working the talk show circuit, hopes to once again turn a profit off her tragic history: She’ll reconnect with the players from that night and report her findings —for a fee. As Libby’s search takes her from shabby Missouri strip clubs to abandoned Oklahoma tourist traps, the unimaginable truth emerges, and Libby finds herself right back where she started—on the run from a killer.”

Gillian Flynn is listed as one of the series co-creators alongside Guerrin Gardner and Brett Johnson. The trio will also serve as writers on the show.

Dark Places was adapted for the big screen in 2015. The movie starred Charlize Theron, Christina Hendricks, Nicholas Hoult, and Chloë Grace Moretz. This adaptation was written and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner.

Because I am also a creepy girl from Kansas City, Missouri, I am very familiar with Gillian Flynn’s novels. Dark Places is definitely one I am eager to revisit. Let me know if you are also a fan of this book. Also let me know if it is one of your favorite Flynn titles at @misssharai.
