The Weekly Wrap-Up: June 7-13, 2009

Most notable this week was all the back and forth about Creepy’s review of the “Killer Cut” of Friday the 13th 2009 (which generated more comments than we’ve seen around here in quite some time).
However, there was also much appreciation being shown to Paramount for its reissues of Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of the F13 franchise. With so much focus on Jason, a few items might have gotten a bit lost in the shuffle. But that’s why we do this feature. From June 7-13, 2009, these are the stories that made the Weekly Wrap-Up:

  • First is something I admit I derived a great deal of personal satisfaction from announcing: the first Vampire-Con is heading to Hollywood, CA this summer. Fans of the undead have long had zombie “walks” and similar gatherings where they’re able to meet and hook up with others of their kind. It’s about time those of us who are of a different persuasion had a chance to do the same.

  • If your interests lie in a more Gothic, fairy tale oriented vein along the lines of Beauty and the Beast, then you’re in luck. You have two adaptations to look forward to over the coming year. Skewing more toward adult audiences, there’s a Syfy Channel version starring the undeniably beauteous Estella Warren that throws in a troll sidekick for its wicked witch. It’s in post now so we should see it on the air before too long. For the Twilight crowd there’s Beastly, which apparently consists of nothing but good-looking cast members, although I must admit the addition of Neil Patrick Harris to its roster has me more interested in it now. In any case, I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more about Beastly prior to its release in July, 2010.

  • The upcoming Ghosts/Aliens could become two projects in one for its stars Jonathan Sadowski and Keir O’Donnell. If the TV series is well received, they’re already signed to do a theatrical version. Comedy Central has dibs on the pilot, and I say it’s a no-brainer, right? It’s got stoners. And ghosts. And aliens. What could possibly go wrong?

  • Next is a story that’s a heckuva lot more significant for what it means for the future than for just the news it conveys. No doubt most of you read about Doom becoming an iPhone application, thought “cool!”, and then went on with your day. We take stuff like this for granted. When he wrote up the piece, Matt mentioned Snake and how far we’ve come in cellular gaming. No kidding! Looking back a little further, those of us who’ve seen video games evolve from Pong and Pac-Man could never have conceived of something like this back in those days. It really makes you wonder what they’ll think of next. But are we the luckiest generation because of living in the Technological Age? The most jaded? Or simply the most easily distracted?

  • One advantage to the hi-tech advances we enjoy is the amount of choices we have. Conventional cable TV, DVR, On Demand, streaming movies, satellite radio, podcasts, etc., etc., are all at our fingertips. So the time is definitely ripe for a production like As Darkness Falls, a multi-platform hybrid inspired by the great anthology series of yesteryear like “CBS Radio Mystery Theater — shows that generated tremendous levels of suspense not through elaborate SFX, but via the human imagination.” It’s both a black & white television program and a podcast/radio show. The first episode, “That Which Has A Name”, premieres on July 3rd at the stroke of midnight. If you came to Dread Central today looking for something different and creative … and genuinely spooky and unnerving … then head over to the As Darkness Falls MySpace videos page and check ’em out.

I’m so intrigued by the premise of As Darkness Falls that under normal circumstances it probably would have been the Woman’s Story of the Week, but some other news broke that cannot be overshadowed. And that is What’s This? Trick ‘r Treat News? Huzzah! I can’t even remember how long we’ve been hearing about this freakin’ film, and now, finally, everyone will be able to decide for themselves if it is truly THE quintessential Halloween film many of those who have seen it are saying it is. Elaine definitely concurs in her review of Trick ‘r Treat: Tales of Mayhem, Mystery & Mischief, the flick’s companion book. And there’s a graphic novel on its way, too, that will coincide with Trick ‘r Treat‘s October release.

Trick ‘r Treat has certainly had an arduous journey on its path toward finding its audience — take a look at the date on the poster below as proof — but it also serves as an inspiration to indie filmmakers and horror fans alike to never give up on themselves (or each other) and the value of their efforts. The cream does almost always rise to the top. Huzzah, indeed!
