Stephen King Names the Worst Horror Movie He’s Ever Seen!

And no, it isn’t Maximum Overdrive!
Stephen King recently posed a question to his Twitter followers: “What is the worst horror movie you ever saw?” Then, to get the ball rolling, he revealed his personal worst: “For me, Blood Feast.”

Blood Feast is noted for being the first horror movie in the “splatter film” subgenre. Released in 1963, Blood Feast was composed, shot, and directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis from a screenplay penned by Allison Louise Downe. The film stars Mal Arnold, William Kerwin, Connie Mason, and Lyn Bolton.
With a current Rotten Tomatoes score of 38%, King’s pick isn’t terribly controversial. If you’ve never experienced the monstrosity that is Blood Feast for yourself, check out the trailer and synopsis below.
Synopsis:
In the sleepy suburbs of Miami, seemingly normal Egyptian immigrant Fuad Ramses (Mal Arnold) runs a successful catering business. He also murders young women and plans to use their body parts to revive the goddess Ishtar. The insane Ramses hypnotizes a socialite in order to land a job catering a party for her debutante daughter, Suzette Fremont (Connie Mason), and turns the event into an evening of gruesome deaths, bloody dismemberment and ritual sacrifice.
While it may be a critical flop, Blood Feast earned big dollars for its producers. Filmed in Miami over the course of nine days, it cost just under $25,000 to produce but earned back millions for its creator and associates. Producer David F. Friedman capitalized on the film’s infamy by distributing vomit bags during theatrical screenings that read: “You may need this when you see Blood Feast“!
The film spawned the sequel Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat, which was released in 2002. Blood Feast got the remake treatment in 2016 when Marcel Walz reimagined the source material. The remake stars Robert Rusler, Caroline Williams, Sophie Monk, and Sadie Katz. Ironically, the remake scores slightly higher on Rotten Tomatoes, currently holding steady at 40%.
