Guillermo del Toro Calls Shocking Free-to-Watch Horror Movie “An unknown gem”

Guillermo del Toro

As a found footage connoisseur of sorts, I’ve made it my life’s mission to watch as many films in the subgenre as possible. There are so many hidden gems out there, waiting to surprise you with their scares and depravity. One such film is Elliot Goldner‘s 2013 film The Borderlands, a religious horror nightmare with one of the most upsetting endings I’ve ever seen. But I’m not the only one who loves this sick little gem. Master of horror Guillermo del Toro is also a fan, which he revealed thanks to the Second Sight Film’s release of The Borderlands on Blu-ray.

In The Borderlands, “A small team of Vatican investigators arrives at a remote church in hopes of demystifying the building’s unusual goings on. But what they discover is more disturbing than they could ever imagine.

See what del Toro had to say about the film below:

But that’s not the only love he showed in the film. He’s been retweeting countless others about the gorgeous new release and even compared The Borderlands to Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Spring due to how surprising it is.

It warms this found footage lover’s heart that a film like The Borderlands is getting so much love from such a massive figure in the genre space. Two years ago, I revisited the film and wrote about the nihilism of its ending, saying, “It’s a pretty routine found footage premise, the ending is what makes this film nothing short of remarkable, disturbing, and downright upsetting.” It makes sense that Guillermo del Toro would be a fan of a film with such an ending, as he’s never one to pull any punches, either. From Pan’s Labyrinth to The Devil’s Backbone, that man knows how to construct one hell of an ending that’ll leave you feeling hollow.

If you love that kind of cinematic experience, then you simply must watch The Borderlands. And luckily for you, it’s streaming now on Tubi!
