The Shroud Continues to Unfold – Read the Script NOW!

We didn’t expect to have an update on The Shroud so soon, but Hollywood’s wheels keep on spinning so we just have to try and keep up while keeping you up-to-date.

Much like the premise of the film itself, things have taken a weird turn. Red Circle Films has just announced the following:

From the Press Release
Red Circle Films has brought on comedy scribe Tim Dowling to rewrite the script for The Shroud in the wake of director Dan Taylor abruptly departing the project. The first draft was penned by John Ray Hax, adapted from his unpublished novel.

The new pic will likely diverge from the original storyline and is being eyed as a starring vehicle for A-list leads such as Robert Downey, Jr., an actor Hollywood’s rumor mill has associated with the project.

The Shroud concerns a Vatican bounty hunter that is hired to retrieve the Shroud of Turin after it is stolen by a secret society of Yeti shape-shifters that wants to clone Jesus to bring about the Apocalypse and the end of humanity…humanity they do not share.

Dowling was named one of Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch in 2010. Lately, Dowling has added action to his resume, having penned the upcoming Chris Pine-Tom Hardy pic This Means War as well as the Midnight Run sequel for Universal.

When reached for comment, our contact at Red Circle explained, “John’s script, while amazing, was turning a lot of people off, so Dowling has come on board to fine tune it a bit by adding more comedic elements and lightening the tone. The movie is a hard sell as is, but we really feel Dowling has the talent to turn many heads and drum up some really positive and financial interest.”

As you would imagine, the original writer of this project John Ray Hax (blog here) isn’t at all crazy about this new direction. “Don’t let Red Circle fool you,” says Hax. “I’ve been blindsided. Romanced and then jilted. They’re taking my script and bastardizing it to make it more family-friendly with big stars and such. I poured my soul into this project, and they’ve poured it out onto the floor, thereby replacing my Jack Daniels with a Shirley Temple. I’m an indie writer. I don’t have the benefits of an agent or a group of folks who believe in me. Make no mistake, though – this isn’t over. Not by a long shot.”

So where does that leave The Shroud? We’ll keep our eyes on Red Circle’s production for sure, but Hax has gone a step further by uploading the original script for The Shroud for anyone to download and read for themselves. Our best advice? If you plan on reading it, do it quickly as we doubt it will be up long.

More soon!
