This Disturbing Body Horror Is Now On Hulu: “One of the most depressing movies I’ve ever seen”

There’s not enough great black-and-white horror out there. Sure, since the advent of color film, it’s understandable why filmmakers would feel inclined to liven up their movies with a broad spectrum of reds, blues, greens, and yellows. But, I earnestly wish black-and-white were more common. Presently, it remains reserved for the rare horror film, often misappropriated as “elevated” when, really, any given filmmaker simply decided it was the best choice for the film. I can’t imagine Mark O’Brien’s The Righteous in anything but striking monochrome, and The Mist is a dish best served without color. Then, of course, there’s Nicolas Pesce’s The Eyes of My Mother, one of the first to inaugurate the contemporary use. If you’ve been curious, now is a great time to check it out. The Eyes of My Mother just landed on Hulu.

The Eyes of My Mother is a striking debut feature from writer/director Nicolas Pesce. While 2020’s The Grudge was an unfortunate misstep, his debut remains one of the strongest horror offerings of the past ten years. Piercing isn’t half bad either.
Star Kika Magalhães is nothing short of phenomenal as Francisca, a profoundly troubled young woman whose life spirals into heinous murder and torture. It’s not for the faint of heart, but those who can stomach it are in for a real treat should they catch it on Hulu.
Luckily, fans online have been thrilled to discover the film is now available on Hulu. Given a limited release in late 2016, it was easily missed, pinging briefly around the release of The Grudge before disappearing again, remembered only by the most ardent horror fans. It deserves to be talked about, and luckily, that’s what’s happening now.

It’s definitely worth talking about more. It’s the perfect balance of chilling and visually stunning, though it never hesitates to shock the audience to their core.
