Fantasia Description
“Finally, a vaccine for AIDS has been found. That its testing phase hasn’t been completed is but a minor detail—this is too ground-breaking a discovery to keep it waiting. After a few months have passed, this overlooked “detail” unleashes a monstrous global outbreak, infecting the Earth with ravenous legions of the undead. The zombie apocalypse has come a-knockin’. But first we travel back in time to experience the ordeal through the eyes of a few inevitable victims. What happens when the virus is slowly spreading through one’s body while at home alone, suffering from unusual symptoms following a bloody injury? Not to mention a peculiar hunger slowly growing inside… Or, if a couple sees itself torn apart by the infection of one of the two, the internal suffering matched by the external anxiety that comes with the realization that it’s now permitted to blow these creatures away? If a family member became one of them, how far will you go to keep on feeding him when his primary obsession is to devour you whole? All hope is not lost, however, as a new vaccine capable of reversing all of this is being developed—the question being, who will get to it first? And what if, after being cured and returned to your daily life, you were haunted by nightmares depicting your own carnage and the people you frantically devoured? Survival is not as easy as it may seem…

An anthology film that’s uniformly engaging from beginning to end is a rare beast indeed. But it does exist, and proof of that can be seen in South Korea’s THE NEIGHBOR ZOMBIE. Following a quick establishing introduction, we’re plunged into independent narratives, created by a quartet of newcomers, in which a general tone is sustained while depicting the creepy crawlers in various lights, collectively aiming for the Romero school of slow and drawn-out dread. Despite the seriousness of the subject, humour is no stranger in this picture, and neither is blood. The different ideas brought to the table by each creator infuse the project with a certain freshness, keeping the tension high even between segments—a common weakness in collective films, avoided here. This is all the more impressive when considering the picture’s minimal budget, proving once again that creativity dominates above all. Come be part of the epidemic!”
