WATCHMEN Test Footage Sports Ray Stevenson As Rorschach

Before Dawn of the Dead and 300 director Zack Synder finally brought Alan Moore’s graphic novel Watchmen to the screen in 2009, many filmmakers attempted to do just that long before.

Notable examples include Terry Gilliam and Darren Aronofsky.

But back in 2003, X-Men and X2: X-Men United screenwriter David Hayter was hired to write and direct an adaptation of the film. He eventually walked away citing “creative differences” but today we’ve learned that he shot some test footage for his version featuring Punisher: War Zone‘s Ray Stevenson as Rorschach and Game of Thrones‘ Iain Glen as Night Owl.

Check it out HERE.

Watchmen takes place in an alternate 1985 America where costumed superheroes are part of everyday life. When one of his former comrades is murdered, masked vigilante Rorschach uncovers a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his retired associates, only one of which has true powers, Rorschach glimpses a far-reaching conspiracy involving their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the world’s future.

Zack Synder’s version starred Jackie Earle Haley as Walter Kovacs / Rorschach, Patrick Wilson as Daniel Dreiberg / Nite Owl II:, Malin Akerman as Laurie Jupiter / Silk Spectre II, Billy Crudup as Jon Osterman / Doctor Manhattan, Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead, Supernatural) as Edward Blake / The Comedian.
