Twilight Saga News: New Moon Wins ShoWest 2009 Fan Choice Award; Summit Courts Oscar Nominees for Breaking Dawn

In what should be a surprise to no one, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is receiving the ShoWest Fandango Fan Choice Award for 2009’s Best Movie. ShoWest, which runs March 15-18, 2010, is the most prestigious and longest running event exclusively for the cinema exhibition and distribution community, and this is the second year Fandango has sponsored the Fan Choice Award in conjunction with the conference.
The award, announced today by ShoWest managing director Robert Sunshine, will be presented at ShoWest’s Final Night Banquet and Award Ceremony on Thursday, March 18, at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas. “Moviegoers on Fandango have been behind the franchise from the very beginning, and that’s why the first Twilight movie won the Fan Choice Award last year,” said Fandango Chief Marketing Officer Ted Hong. “The big question will be whether or not Eclipse will be in the running for next year’s award and if the franchise can pull off a three-peat.”
“You might have guessed that Avatar would win this year’s Fan Choice Award since Avatar was the top ticket-seller in our company’s history,” Hong added, “but never bet against the passion, loyalty, and dedication of the vociferous Twilight fans.”
Speaking of those fans, they are becoming more and more restless, waiting for Summit to announce (a) whether Breaking Dawn, the final installment in the Twilight Saga, will be one movie or two and (b) who the director of one or both of the Breaking Dawn films might be.
Speculation as to the (b) part of the equation ramped up again today as EW.com claims that three directors who have been nominated for numerous awards are in the running: Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), Gus Van Sant (Milk), and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls). Per EW Van Sant’s reps confirmed that he’s been approached, but Coppola and Condon’s people didn’t return phone calls by press time, [and] Summit declined to comment.
Van Sant’s been mentioned previously (Twilight Saga star Robert Pattinson is reportedly strongly in his corner), but both Coppola and Condon are new to the game. Something tells us Coppola would pass since thus far her M.O. has been to only direct scripts she has written, and Condon seems an odd choice at best. Considering some of the more bizarre elements of Breaking Dawn, especially the birth scene, we’re still holding out for Cronenberg.
Only time will tell of course, but once it does, you can be sure we’ll let you know the result.
