Samuel L. Jackson Says M. Night Shyamalan Has Mellowed Over Time; Used to Be a “Dictator”

When Glass hits theaters this Friday, it will form a trilogy with 2000’s Unbreakable and 2017’s Split. Samuel L. Jackson plays the titular supervillain Mr. Glass and has watched writer/director M. Night Shyamalan’s career in its entirety. In a recent sit-down with The Hollywood Reporter, Jackson explained what it was like working with the then-rising star on Unbreakable almost two decades ago.
“He used to be a really harsh dictator. He’s mellowed. He used to say, ‘Do it like this.’ And then he would tell you, ‘Do it this way. Don’t blink. Don’t move. Just say the words.’ And you’d say the words and he’d go, ‘No. Don’t emphasize that word. Emphasize this word.’”

So how did this past experience influence Jackson’s approach to Glass?
“I did it the way I wanted to do it. He would go, ‘You want to do it another way’? I’d go, No. Because you go to the editing room. I don’t. You like the way you want me to do it. You’re going to look at that first. I’m not going give you that option.”

Synopsis:
M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of
his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, from Touchstone, and 2016’s Split,
from Universal—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From
Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as
Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are
James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple
identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only
captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of
Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a
series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as
an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
