“Saturday night at the movies; who cares what picture we see…” Coincidentally, the first time I ever saw Popcorn, I do believe it was a Saturday night at the movies. I did, however, care what picture I saw.
One thing viewers of Popcorn might find strange, at least I did initially, is why do so many of the songs in this film about a maniac killing off the purveyors of a college town b-movie film festival have a reggae vibe? Probably because this 1991 horror flick was actually filmed in Jamaica so they most likely hired some local talent for the soundtrack. I think Popcorn could very well be the first horror movie ever shot in Jamaica that has nothing whatsoever to do with voodoo.
There’s a distinct reggae vibe to this cover version of “Saturday Night at the Movies”, a song originally made famous in the very early Sixties by The Drifters. Ossie D and Stevie G do the honors as the late, great Ray Walston sets the stage for a class of doomed film students to put on a bad film festival that ends very badly for most of them.
