Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman Talks Horror And Her New Book [Watch]

If you’ve seen the Shudder documentary Horror Noire, then you’re familiar with Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman, the woman who literally wrote the book on Black horror. In fact, the documentary shares her book’s name, which is officially titled Horror Noire: Blacks in American Horror Films from the 1890s to Present. Frankly, it’s required reading for horror fans everywhere. Now, Dr. Coleman is back with a new book, co-written with Mark H. Harris, titled The Black Guy Dies First: Black Horror Cinema From Fodder To Oscar.

This new book is tackling the age-old trope of Black characters, primarily Black male characters, being the first to die in any horror film, regardless of subgenre. Dr. Coleman and Harris tackle that trope and more to illuminate not only horror’s issues, but also how those issues have started to shift in just the last few years. It’s smart, funny, and another piece of required reading for horror fans.

Jazz and Kat from Girl That’s Scary spoke with Dr. Coleman about her new book, the horror genre, and more!
