‘Sting’: New Spider Horror Film Crawls Into Theaters This Spring

A new horror movie has spun a mysterious web that has caught the internet’s attention. Many people are excited by this upcoming nightmare fuel. However, some of us who survived Arachnophobia as children are being triggered. Behold: Sting, coming from Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner, the mind behind the Wyrmwood series. Here’s everything you need to know about this title that already has most of us on edge.

Per the synopsis,

“One cold, stormy night in New York City, a mysterious object falls from the sky and smashes through the window of a rundown apartment building. It is an egg, and from this egg emerges a strange little spider…

The creature is discovered by Charlotte, a rebellious 12-year-old girl obsessed with comic books. Despite her stepfather Ethan’s best efforts to connect with her through their comic book co-creationFang Girl, Charlotte feels isolated. Her mother and Ethan are distracted by their new baby and are struggling to cope, leaving Charlotte to bond with the spider. Keeping it as a secret pet, she names it Sting.

As Charlotte’s fascination with Sting increases, so does its size. Growing at a monstrous rate, Sting’s appetite for blood becomes insatiable. Neighbors’ pets start to go missing, and then the neighbors themselves. Soon Charlotte’s family and the eccentric characters of the building realize that they are all trapped, hunted by a ravenous supersized arachnid with a taste for human flesh… and Charlotte is the only one who knows how to stop it.”

Sting was written and directed by Kiah Roache Turner. The movie stars Ryan Corr, Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Robyn Nevin, Noni Hazelhurst, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, and Jermaine Fowler.

I’m excited to see Jermaine Fowler (The Blackening and Sorry To Bother You) on the cast list. I’m rooting for his character to survive this mutant spider situation. Because my reactions to these photos are so severe, I don’t think I can handle this movie on the big screen.

Unlike many movies it’ll be compared to—looking at Spiders 3D and Eight Legged FreaksSting avoided the PG-13 crowd and earned an R-rating. That means this spider business is serious, and we will need to be accompanied by an adult to see it in theaters.

Sting crawls into theaters on April 12, 2024.
