Mike Flanagan Calls Chilling #1 Netflix Movie “Absolutely one of the best films of 2023”

This gripping thriller based on a terrifying real-life event has claimed the top spot on the Netflix charts. It has continued to earn tons of praise from viewers in its second week on the app, including filmmaker Mike Flanagan. Society of the Snow (Original Title: La sociedad de la nieve) is the #1 movie globally on the streamer. Here is everything you need to know about the film.

In the film,

“In 1972, the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, catastrophically crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash and finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.”

Society of the Snow was directed by J. A. Bayona (The OrphanageA Monster Calls). The screenplay was written by J. A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques, and Nicolás Casariego. It is adapted from the book La sociedad de la nieve by Pablo Vierci. The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic Roldán (Yosi, The Regretful Spy), Matías Recalt (Apache: The Life of Carlos Tevez), Diego Vegezzi (Toublanc), and Esteban Kukuriczka (Habitación Disponible).

Many Netflix viewers are still caught up in the emotionally charged film about survival and perseverance in the face of unimaginable circumstances. Others are understandably annoyed that others think it is a “remake” of the whitewashed 1993 film Alive.

The film premiered in select theaters on December 22nd, 2023. It then became available on Netflix on January 4th.

I’m happy Society of the Snow is on Netflix. It’s about time this story was told with respect and cast appropriately. We also will never have enough J. A. Bayona movies streaming. I’ve got a box of tissues and have carved out a couple of hours to cry this week. I hope you have plans to do the same. Find me at @misssharai if you do.
