This Valentine’s Day Matt Busch Gives The Dead Their Due

“Chew your meat for you. Pass it back and forth. In a passionate kiss. From my mouth to yours. ‘Cause I like you.” Hey, man. In this day and age even the living dead could use a little love, and artist Matt Busch is back with a whole new slew of grue guaranteed to touch you until you weep.

Artist Matt Busch is about to unveil the third incarnation of Hollywood-is-Dead, a collection of re-imagined movie posters with a zombie twist. Busch first made waves with his undead parodies in 2009 with Zombie Wars, a project authorized by Lucasfilm to repaint all 6 Star Wars movie posters with his decrepit vision. Since then, the outbreak expanded into an online gallery, Hollywood-is-Dead.com, with over 30 posters, including Harry Potter (Scary Rotter), Toy Story (Toy Gory) and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Breakfast is Tiffany).
Now, just in time for Valentine’s Day, Busch has painted 9 new infectious posters with a romantic theme. Paying special attention to cinematic love stories and “date movies”, this series offers classics like The Wizard of Oz (The Walking Dead of Oz), Beauty and the Beast (Beauty and the Feast), and Edward Scissorhands (Deadward Scissorhands). Beginning February 2nd, the Hollywood-is-Dead website will release a new poster each weekday, leading up to the final masterpiece on February 14th.
Busch is already a renowned poster artist, having illustrated posters, books, and trading cards for such properties as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Indiana Jones. With Hollywood-is-Dead, he painstakingly hand-paints every detail with traditional mixed media (as opposed to digital altering like Photoshop) before shredding the classics into bloody pulps. As for going with a somewhat softer side this time around, Busch comments, “These aren’t just ‘chick flicks’ for the ladies. I think the males will really enjoy getting their better halves art prints based on movies like The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (The Twitch Saga: Eek! Lips.) and Sex and the City (Wrecks and the City). Nothing says ‘I love you’ like the rotting undead.”
In addition to the website, the Hollywood-is-Dead original paintings are exhibited in the ArtInsights Animation and Film Art Gallery in Reston, Virginia. Portions of the gallery sales are donated to the National Film Preservation Foundation. Gallery owner Leslie Combemale states, “Yes, these images are over-the-top, but they are also a commentary about our pop culture and a love note from Matt to the original artists who created these classics and to the dying art used to make classic movie posters.”
