This Iconic Horror Game Could Enter The Video Game Hall of Fame

At the beginning of every new year, we witness a flurry of video game awards ceremonies and shows honoring the work of the past year. However, there is one event that truly immortalizes games in history: the World Video Game Hall Of Fame. Established to recognize the most influential video games of all time, it was announced yesterday that the original Resident Evil, a game that has left an indelible mark on the gaming industry, is now a finalist in The World Video Game Hall Of Fame.

Organized by the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, they have opened the doors for the public to have their say. They announced their 12 finalists, and now it’s your turn to vote for these games. The top three games from the public vote will go onto a ballot with other selections from the selection committee. The inductees this year will be announced on May 9, 2024.

Starting in 2015, there are currently 40 games held in the Video Game Hall of Fame, and while they generally range from all genres, there is an inherent lack of horror. While some, myself included, would argue that The Last Of Us, inducted in 2023, is a survival horror game, this is the year that we could finally see a titan of the genre get inducted.

Here is what Strong National Museum of Play had to say about Resident Evil:

“Although it wasn’t the first horror video game, Resident Evil (or Biohazard as it was known in Japan)was the first game to popularize the “survival horror” genre. Created by game director Shinji Mikami and released by Capcom in 1996, Resident Evil spawned a billion-dollar media franchise while it helped demonstrate that video games could offer mature entertainment for older teenagers and adults. As of 2022, films based on the franchise have collectively grossed more than $1.2 billion.”

So go cast your vote, and let’s get another horror title in there, and not just any horror game, one of the all-time greats!
