Stephen King, Killer Cars and Lovecraft? FROM A BUICK 8 Is Being Adapted for The Screen!

Stephen King, A Killer Car, and H.P. Lovecraft? Sign me up! Stephen King is no stranger to the formula of evil cars. John Carpenter’s Christine was adapted from a King short story and is counted as one of my all-time favorite films. King himself directed the film adaption of another one of his stories in 1986’s Maximum Overdrive.

King is also no stranger to the works of controversial writer H.P. Lovecraft, and the early twentieth-century writer’s influence can be found throughout many of King’s works. Stephen King once said, “Now that time has given us some perspective on his work, I think it is beyond doubt that H. P. Lovecraft has yet to be surpassed as the twentieth century’s greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale.”

Screenrant is reporting that From A Buick 8, Stephen King’s “Most Lovecraftian” story is getting a big-screen adaptation. Filmmaker Jim Mickle (Stakeland, We Are What We Are) will direct, and the film will star Thomas Jane (Hung), an actor who himself is no stranger to Stephen King after starring in the Stephen King adaptations of The Mist and 1922.

Thomas Jane in The Mist

Screenrant reports, From A Buick 8’s plot centers around, as the title implies, a car of non-earthly origin whose trunk contains something that kills (or at least maddens) anyone who bears witness to it, it’s a potentially silly premise. In the book, this turns into a surprisingly scary, slow-burn horror precisely because of how little the novel depicts and how much is left to the imagination. In much the same way, the movie’s attached director Jim Mickle’s earlier crime thriller Cold In July cut away during its most gruesome scene to make an unseen snuff movie’s impact much more effective than gory effects could have hoped to.

With a story of this origin, great director and star. Not to mention the seeming public appetite for Lovecraftian horror with recent titles like HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Richard Stanley’s Color Out Of Space and last year’s Underwater. This has all of the makings of an excellent film, and I cannot wait to see it!
