An Oregon man has been taken into custody following the death of his 79-year-old mother, who he reportedly believed to be a vampire.

Daily Mail reports that 56-year-old Robert Bruce Poe, of Siletz, OR, phoned police on March 12 to say he had ‘accidentally’ killed his mom. When first responders arrived on the scene, they noted that Poe’s hands and clothes were covered in blood. The suspect could be seen clutching a letter and his mother’s purse, which was also coated in blood.

The victim, Judy D Poe, was pronounced dead shortly after authorities arrived on the scene. Case documents reveal that the deceased was discovered about 250 yards from the home the two shared, near a  2004 PT Cruiser that appeared to be stuck in gravel. After locating the victim, authorities noted a ‘large round stake which appeared to be the broken end of a garden tool protruding from her throat’.

Poe reportedly told law enforcement that he believed his mother was a vampire because she would poke him in the night and he would awaken to bloodstained sheets. The suspect eventually went on to tell authorities that “he had to protect himself”.

At this juncture, Poe is facing charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. The suspect is being held without bail at the Lincoln County Jail. These are not the first criminal charges Poe has faced. His prior legal troubles date back as far as 1986 and include DUI, possession of methamphetamine, uninsured driving, theft, and harassment.
