Gary Dauberman Interview: Annabelle Will Be a “Maestro of Mayhem” in ANNABELLE COMES HOME

Dread Central was lucky enough to sit down with Annabelle Comes Home writer/director Gary Dauberman while the film was still being pieced together. Now that it’s slated to be released in a matter of weeks, we’re finally able to share excerpts of our extended conversation with a filmmaker who’s already left quite an imprint on The Conjuring Universe launched by James Wan in 2013.
When Annabelle Comes Home on June 26th, it’ll be the diminutive devil doll’s third feature film–but this won’t be the conclusion of a trilogy. Dauberman assured us:
“When I think of trilogies it’s like, I don’t think [Annabelle:] Creation was necessarily the Empire [Strikes Back], you know what I mean? The doll connects the stories and I think the mythology connects the stories. But I don’t think this puts closure to the Annabelle story in any way.”
So what can we expect from the evil vessel on her third outing? For starters: Madness and mayhem!
“I looked at her as sort of that the maestro of the madness or the mayhem. Kind of a master of ceremonies is a great way to put it. And how she sort of charges up the other artifacts that are in the room. What’s that interaction like? That’s something I dive into.”
While Annabelle Comes Home is the third spinoff for the doll (and the seventh Conjuring Universe film), this upcoming release will definitely have its own identity. One of the things that will really set Annabelle Comes Home apart from her peers is that the majority of this installment takes place in a single evening.
“I wanted a little sense of playfulness because it is teenagers,” Dauberman explained. “It’s teenage girls in a house. I wanted to have that sort of vibe to it, like seventies style horror movies. I think there’s a couple of more moments of levity in this movie just because I like that. I like a little bit of laughter because if you get them laughing and then you get them scared, it’s a sharper contrast. [Annabelle Comes Home] takes place over the course of just one night. We haven’t done that before, for the most part. It’s usually a couple of days or a week or whatever.”

Synopsis:
Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren lock the possessed doll in the artifacts room in their house. But when the doll awakens the room’s evil spirits, it soon becomes an unholy night of terror for the couple’s 10-year-old daughter, her friends, and their young baby sitter.
