Shadow of the Colossus Style Game Prey for the Gods Unveiled

Sony’s Shadow of the Colossus remains one of the most cherished and respected games of all time. And with its long awaited follow-up, The Last Guardian, being in development hell for many years, the news of a direct sequel is certainly a welcome surprise. Called Prey for the Gods, it will relocate from the grassy open plains of the first game to a new, wintry location, but the basic gameplay that has you fighting huge colossi whilst exploring the land remains the same.

Oh wait… it’s actually a completely separate game from indie developer No Matter Studios. My bad. But you have to forgive me for making such a mistake, as everything about Prey for the Gods looks identical to Shadow of the Colossus. Even the colossi themselves, resembling a cross between organic creatures and artificially crafted machines, look pretty much exactly the same between the two games.

If you’re still unconvinced, then fast forward to 0:48 in the trailer. The way that the player ascends the colossus by climbing its fur, which is shown several more times throughout the brief teaser, is such a ripoff from Shadow of the Colossus that No Matter Studios should count their blessings that Sony is not as strict on copyright as, y’know, that other Japanese video game publisher (cough *Nintendo’s bullshit YouTube system* cough); otherwise, they’d have a lawsuit in their hands. Plagiarism is the highest form of compliment.

Having said that, I am not saying that Prey for the Gods doesn’t deserve a chance because it does look like it has potential, and the snowy backdrop does add a strong atmospheric layer to the awesomeness of monster slaying. The fact that it’s been in development for over a year should also mean that there has been some genuine time and effort invested. That can’t be denied. I just wish, especially as it’s an indie game, meaning that there are no limits on creativity, that they’d not been so blatantly obvious about where their inspiration came from.

To restore balance and reclaim the land from the brink, you will be faced with questions that not even a god knows the answer to.
